Contraindications for Massage and Bodywork
Massage and Bodywork treatments are NOT intended to diagnose any condition and are not a substitute for professional medical counseling. Along with this, if you are currently being treated for a particular condition or have symptoms of an undiagnosed condition, it is your responsibility to contact your doctor(s) to rule out any possible contraindications.
Massage and Bodywork can have direct effects on blood and lymph circulation, muscle release, somatoemotional release and altered levels of consciousness during deep relaxation. As such, if you are undergoing any medical treatment, physical and/or psychological, a doctor’s prescription is recommended to rule out any possible adverse reactions in receiving a particular massage and bodywork treatment which may also include heat/cold application, topical application of particular crèmes and/or oils, and aromatherapy.
When in doubt, get a doctor’s prescription and check whether massage and bodywork is advisable or if modifications are needed.
In some cases, modifications may be made to certain treatments to alter client positioning as well as provide proper amounts of pressure and techniques.
"Regarding certain prescription and over-the-counter medications, it is important to check with your doctor and/or pharmacist regarding any potential adverse reactions. Such reactions involving certain medications could include increased risk of bruising, postural hypotension, GI stress, abdominal bleeding, lowered immunity, compromised stretching ability, fragile tissues, burning or tingling, decreased sensation of pain and/or temperature."
